Don’t upset the rhythm

Finally I’ve found some time to blog, so I’m all about compiling my best of the year and the decade lists.  First up, 2009’s best singles.  It was a pretty good year for singles all round, particularly from female artists…

20 Dizzee Rascal – Bonkers
He was, it was, and it was one of the year’s most catchy and enduring records.

19 Muse – Undisclosed Desires
Hooray! The Resistance is now a fiver! Happy New Year to me!

18 Kasabian – Fire

It sounds as if it’s a song that’s been with us for years, and that’s not an insult.

17 The Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition
Not everyone’s cup of tea but I liked it.

16 Paramore – Ignorance
I feel like a twelve year old advocating Paramore, but they’re a bit of a guilty pleasure chez Rad. Not that song about burying the castle though, that was just silly.

15 Noisettes – Wild Young Hearts

It’s a shame we didn’t have a summer (AGAIN) because this would have been a great tune to soundtrack it.

14 Lady Gaga – Poker Face
If you’ve never played Lips, you might not understand why this is included. If you have… Mum mum mum Mah!

13 Skunk Anansie – Because of You
A belated but welcome return from one of my favourite 90s bands…

12 La Roux – In for the Kill
Not the last time you’ll be seeing this person in my chart…

11 Empire of the Sun – We Are the People
The album was a bit disappointing but this was one of the best tracks of spring/summer; encapsulating the year’s 80s/electro revival perfectly.

10 Editors – Papillon
Synthetic was made for such as this.

9 Beyonce – Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it)
Yo imma let you finish but…

8 Cerys Matthews – Arlington Way
A good new album, a 6 Music show, this single – her post-jungle rehabilitation continues.

7 AR Rahman and the Pussycat Dolls – Jai Ho
If you’d said to me last year that Lily Allenn, the Pussycat Dolls and an X Factor winner would feature in my top 10 of 2009, I’d have laughed in your face. Just goes to show what a year it’s been…

6 Lily Allen – The Fear
I’m not overly convinced by the album and she still annoys me but there’s no denying that this track is her first bonafide classic single.

5 Noisettes – Don’t Upset the Rhythm (Go Baby Go)
Songs from adverts can become annoying due to sheer ubiquity, and this is possibly true of this track, but it was still immense and gave the Noisettes a much deserved shot of publicity. Plus any song with the lyric ‘kick, snare, hat, ride’ will always please a drummer.

4 Little Boots – Remedy
A solid, enjoyable album, and this was by far the standout track. This was the sound of my “summer”.

3 La Roux – Bulletproof
I know she is a bit annoying as a person, but she put out one of the year’s strongest albums and two of its standout singles, wand that can’t be sniffed at. Of all the electropop stuff that came out this year, this is the track people will remember in decades to come.

2 Gossip – Heavy Cross
Yeah, OK, it was essentially Standing in the Way of Control pt 2, but when could that ever be a bad thing?

1 Alexandra Burke – Bad Boys
The tune that has most made me want to dance and has most stuck in my head. I can’t see any of this year’s X Factor finalists making the 2010 list, mind. Oh, and this was also ace.
